BEST THINGS TO DO IN SUMMER 2024!

Cottagers have been “coming up” to Fenelon Falls at Lock #34, and vicinity, since well before the 386 km Trent Canal waterway first opened in 1922.  Others have decided to purchase a cottage more recently. Regardless, most are quite content to relax and enjoy all that dockside, or near dockside, has to offer.

So, what do we recommend to entertain weekend guests who may not yet have absorbed the relaxed cottage vibe. With such a great response to our Muskoka recommendations, we’ve once again turned to our friends and clients for must-see/must-do visitor Fenelon Falls, and vicinity, recommendations for your cottage arrivals.

Early Risers

On Friday mornings, head over to the Fenelon Falls Farmers’ Market in the “old arena lot” and check out all the fresh produce. Don’t know where the old lot is? Ask anyone and they’ll direct you.

Our top client breakfast recommendation is Signatures in Fenelon Falls favoured for its family style atmosphere - located beside the Rub and Scrub car wash.  We also really like the White Cottage Cafe for fresh baked goods and a solid morning coffee - they also make great paninis and a mean BLT for lunch.

For Mid-Day Adventurers:

Our favourite Fenelon stop remains Grr8 Finds. Caution - you and your guests will easily lose all sense of time as you peruse vendor stalls displaying books, collectibles, antiques and jars of colourful candy.

Want a hostess gift? If your guest doesn’t find you one at Grr8 Finds be sure to take them to Diana’s and subtly suggest one.

Natalia recommends The Butterfly Boutique for a wide selection of ladies clothing and fun accessories. And then there is the quintessential Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream cone at Slices N’ Scoops right beside Lock #34. Not only can you slowly devour one or a combo of 37 flavours - you can watch boaters navigate the locks. For lunch there is the stalwart Texas Burger (Liane and I like this one) or Lotus Indian Bistro which Mark and I enjoy every summer and is ideal for dine in or takeout.

Cody Vaillant and Maggie McCallum East End Electric Records adds magnificently to the gritty, retro charm of Fenelon Falls.

Fenelon Falls Lock 34 Bikeshare

A number of our Kawartha Lakes friends recommend biking the Victoria Rail Trail. Community Bikeshare offers rentals in Fenelon Falls with bike rental locations near the Trent-Severn Waterway locks. Bikes are available from spring through summer into autumn and can be booked by the phone app Movatic.

Looking for a sandy beach? We recommend Verulam Park on the north shore of Sturgeon Lake with lots of picnic, docking and parking space.

Fenelon Falls has a storied history and nowhere tells it better than the Maryboro Lodge Museum. This summer is packed with concerts, open mic, afternoon tea - ideal for all ages and stages. We went Wednesday afternoon for tea and came away recommending this one!

If a friends and family round of golf is on your agenda we highly recommend the 9 hole lakeside Sturgeon Point Golf Club - start out or finish up on the patio overlooking Sturgeon Lake. Savour a local brew with hot and cold snacks made on the spot.  Free docking available.

Waterbridge Cafe and Confectionary, located in the old McArthur House Hotel (and later The Livery Clothing Store) right at Lock #34 looks like a nice stop! We haven't been there yet so let us know your thoughts!

Evening Fun

Fenelon Falls is summer home to many celebrities and the Grove Theatre offers a truly magical outdoor space to showcase these and other global talents. The Grove has been a hit with every guest we’ve taken.

Or for a time tested regional tradition head up to Kinmount where The Highlands Cinemas has been a must do summer staple for generations. We just saw The Movie Man, all about the owner - Sam also gives this one big thumbs up.
